GARY EDWARDS LIVEOAK FL 5-22-11
Gary Edwards, 43, was killed by a drunk driver after being forced off SR 51 late Saturday night in Live Oak. Edwards was life flighted to a Gainesville hospital where he was later placed on life support. Cameron said that Edwards was taken off life support around 11 a.m. Sunday.
Cameron said he drove directly to Gainesville upon hearing the news of the accident. At least 50 people did the same, and many stayed at the hospital throughout the night, according to Cameron.
Cameron said Edwards will be greatly missed by his fellow deputies and officers, the community, school faculty and the many young people whose lives he touched.
“No one can walk in his shoes,” said Cameron.
The Florida Highway Patrol reported that Edwards was traveling northbound on SR 51 about .7 miles south of Live Oak in a 1994 Ford Ranger pickup, when a 2008 Nissan Altima, driven by 53, Live Oak, also northbound, struck the rear of Edwards vehicle, causing it to lose control and off the west shoulder, where the right side of the Ford struck a utility pole.
Leyva was not injured and was placed under arrest for DUI/serious bodily injury, open container and careless driving.
Edwards was also the school resource officer at Suwannee Middle School. He was off duty at the time of the crash.
