My parents were killed by a drunk driver near Mt. Auburn Il.

by Katie Greene Kohl
(Taylorville, Il)

On March 22, 1996 My parents David and Janet Greene of Mt. Auburn, had gone to see my grandma Greene who was in a nursing home in Taylorville, Il. She had fallen and broken her hip... I was supposed to go with them, but at the last minute my mom arranged for me to stay at a friends house. I could'nt stay though, for some reason I was restless. I insisted on going home and that is what we did. She stayed with me. At 1:37am on March 23, 1996 a hospital in Decatur Il called asked for my mom or dad then asked my age. I was 13- the nurse immediately asked for the number of my closest relative. My brother had worked earlier that eve then left for St. Louis he was 22. My other grandma was in branson, so I gave them my aunts number. At the time we didn't know the severity of the accident. My friends mom came to get her and we left for Decatur to find out about my mom. She was dead when we got there. A van of 25-30 yr olds out celebrating a b'day, missed a curve and hit my parents head on while they were coming home from the nursing home. The scene was so horrific, that they had to take my mom to one hosp in Decatur and my dad to another in Springfield Il. He had died instantly, But my mom hung on as long as she could but we never saw my mom or dad alive again. In one split second a careless person took away my entire life. Our lives have been hell everyday since, even though we all fake it to get through the days. I see the occupants of the van around town.... I have forgiven. I know that everytime they see me they know how they ruined the lives of an entire family and community. That gives me some peace. Life goes on, but for them, i'm a constant reminder of their choices.

That important bottle of beer NEW
by: Anonymous

I responded to the accident scene when your mom and dad were killed. It was a scene that I will never forget, eventhough I have seen it hundreds of times before. The tradgedy of the fact that someone thinks a damn bottle of beer is more important than a human life. Some people live for that bottle of beer and nothing else, and that is pathetic. So many people out there think that they are invincible, and that something like this can never happen to them, that they can continue to drive drunk, nothing will happen and life will go on. I have seen this time and time again, and it seems to always be the innocent ones that pay for someone else's stupidity. You have always had my sympathy and my admiration for how you grew up. You and Davey need to pat yourselves on the back--well done

The drunk live and the innocent die!! NEW
by: Ann Lussier

This is a horror noone should ever have to go through and it is definately one where if you have not been there dealing with the loss of a loved one to a drunk driver ,it is hard to understand. On September 20, 2012 I got one of the phone calls that noone should ever have to receive, my beautiful 24 yr old niece Kaisha Guerrini was hit head by a drunk driver and killed. She was a single mother to her 3 yr old son and was a vibrant ray of sunshine in so many peoples lives. She was in the national Guard, going to college and working. Ever since that day of lives have not been the same and to be honest I don't feel they will ever be the same again. I forgave the man who killed my niece I feel deep in my heart that the guilt of what he did to all of our lives will gradually eat him apart inside.
They say time makes things better but I really am starting to wonder if that will ever be true.
God Bless You and you are in my prayers!!

I am really sorry for the way you lost your parents. May God bless you for the remainder of your life with happiness and peace in your heart. People who drive drunk and kill someone should rot in prison for a very long time. They should not be allowed to walk the streets and carry on with their lives as if nothing has happened.
