A Collage of Stephanie Rae McGill
Stephanie Rae McGill was returning with a friend from the Jersey shore on June 9, 2007. She was a passenger. Their car was struck head-on by a 17 year old drunk driver going the wrong way on the highway. The drunk driver in the other vehicle died instantly. Stephanie died the next day of traumatic brain injury.
Stephanie was attending Ocean County Community College and working 2 jobs. She was a great dancer and loved the music of Christina Aguilera. For variety, she changed the color of her hair often. She loved the smell of bounce dryer sheets and put them in her dresser drawers and in the vents in her room for their fragrance.
Stephanie's biggest joy was spending time with her friends and family. In fact, it's hard to find a photo of Steph by herself. She was the youngest of 4 siblings. She leaves behind her sisters Kelly, Dana and Tracy, her mother Barbara Brancato McGill, her father Shawn McGill, 20 cousins, 18 aunts and uncles, and 2 grandmothers.
The loss of Stephanie has left a hole in the heart of our family. Because of a drunk driver and all those that let him get in a car drunk, Stephanie is no longer with us.
It took a course of events for this to happen. The man chose to drink, others gave him drinks, his family let him get in the vehicle drunk, he drove for miles driving on sidewalks and on the wrong side of the road.
It's never popular to be the one to tell someone no, to be the one to take the keys away, to make someone stay over and sleep anywhere instead of getting in a car.
Be big, be brave, be smart - don't drink and drive and stop others from drinking and driving. No one wants to live our tragic story or the stories of so many others who were victims of a drunk driver.
